Depression is not always obvious sadness
Depression can appear as loss of interest, low energy, irritability, disrupted sleep, slowed thinking, guilt, withdrawal, poor concentration, or difficulty completing ordinary tasks. If symptoms persist or current treatment is not helping enough, a psychiatric evaluation can clarify reasonable next steps.

Treatment should fit the person
A depression evaluation considers the pattern and duration of symptoms, daily functioning, prior episodes, medical and family history, sleep, substances, other medications, anxiety, trauma, and possible periods of unusually elevated or irritable mood. Different conditions can produce overlapping symptoms and may require different approaches.
Monitoring matters
If medication becomes part of the plan, follow-up care evaluates response, side effects, safety, adherence, and whether treatment remains appropriate. Children, adolescents, and young adults require particular attention to new or worsening suicidal thoughts or unusual behavioral changes after starting or changing certain antidepressants.
